I have lived in America for many years. My dentist, physician,tax preparer, mail person, grocer and many others around me are Americans. I daily converse with numerous people and often participate in various special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, and holidays. I have had a decade of opportunity to watch people in their everyday situations, and this is what I have observed:

 

People express themselves similarly in similar circumstances.

 

Well, to be precise, every person has his or her individual vocabulary. However, a good deal of what Americans say belongs to an invariable �Set of Expressions�.

 

So, it appears obvious that if you want to develop speech that is natural-sounding and diverse, you should study a relatively limited number of spoken clichés, and then use them in accordance with a current situation. This approach saves you from learning words and sentences of secondary importance and significantly simplifies your communication:

 

When people hear from you a familiar expression with a meaning they easily recognize, there is an instantaneous understanding.

 

This is how I came to the idea of putting together a list of preferred English expressions that may be recommended for individual study and practical use. This list includes only real-life common expressions. This list does not include rare or substandard words, vulgarisms, archaisms, regionalisms and the like.
